Our Testing Process
We don’t review software from press releases or screenshots. Every product we score is installed and used hands-on by a member of the Lifli team for a minimum testing period before a verdict is written. For complex software (development tools, professional creative apps), the testing period is longer.
Our testing covers:
- Installation and initial setup experience
- Core feature set — does it do what it claims?
- Edge cases and less-obvious functionality
- Performance on current hardware (Apple Silicon and Intel Mac)
- Support responsiveness — we contact support as a real user would
- Value assessment — how does the price compare to alternatives?
The Scoring System
Every review on Lifli includes an overall score out of 10, built from five equally weighted dimensions:
Does the software deliver on its core promise? Are features well-implemented or superficial? Does it do things competitors don’t?
Can a new user accomplish core tasks without documentation? Is the UI intuitive? Is complexity hidden or exposed unnecessarily?
Is the price justified by the quality and depth of the product? How does it compare to alternatives at the same price point? Is a free tier available and generous?
Launch time, memory usage, stability, crash frequency, and behavior under load. Tested on Apple Silicon (M-series) and where relevant, Intel Mac.
Quality and speed of customer support. Availability of documentation, knowledge base, and community. Response time to a real support query submitted by our team.
What the Scores Mean
| Score | Rating | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 9.0 – 10 | Exceptional | Best in class. Buy it without hesitation. |
| 8.0 – 8.9 | Excellent | Highly recommended with minor limitations. |
| 7.0 – 7.9 | Good | Solid product. Worth buying for the right user. |
| 6.0 – 6.9 | Above Average | Has real strengths but notable weaknesses. |
| 5.0 – 5.9 | Average | Does the job. Better alternatives likely exist. |
| Below 5.0 | Poor | Significant problems. We explain exactly what they are. |
We do not award 10/10. No software is perfect and a perfect score would undermine the credibility of every other score on the site.
Review Updates
Software changes. A product that scored 7.5 in 2024 may deserve 9.0 in 2026 — or vice versa. We actively update reviews when:
- A major version is released
- Pricing changes significantly
- A reader flags information that is no longer accurate
- Our team retests a product during a regular review cycle
Updated reviews show a “Last Updated” date at the top of the article.
Editorial Independence
Lifli’s scores and verdicts are never influenced by commercial relationships. Companies cannot pay for a higher score, request changes to published reviews, or preview review content before publication.
We have operated in the Mac software space since 2003. Our credibility with readers is more valuable than any affiliate commission.
